Having a panic attack when driving is very common especially for those that suffer from a panic disorder. There are many reasons for this, one being that driving can naturally be stressful for many drivers and another is that you are locked in a car from which you can’t escape from (at least without running out of the car and making a scene). There’s a lot of pressure.
A typical panic attack in a car can start from a single palpitation, sweaty palms, pins and needles or even as a bit of road anxiety. Those already suffering from the disorder can even get anxious from worrying about having a panic attack, which in turn can cause them to have one. It can be a vicious cycle.
There are often only two questions in a person’s mind who suffers from this. What are panic attack causes and how to them in general. There is good news however, and that is that panic attacks can be eliminated once and for all by using a rather simple method.
The first step is to understand that panic attacks are not harmful. They are merely extremely uncomfortable – in fact, so uncomfortable that most first time sufferers believe that they are having a heart attack.
The second step is to understand what causes them, which is physical, emotional or psychological exhaustion. When you become depleted in any of these areas, the body becomes sensitized and susceptible to ‘mental illness’. When sensitized, even normal bodily functions and sensations begin to feel abnormal or uncomfortable, and can trigger a wave of fear to come over you. Once fear is in the equation, the body begins releasing adrenaline which causes the symptoms to intensify, your heart to begin beating faster, and among other things, pins and needles to develop along with hot and cold flushes. After feeling these new symptoms your fear only grows and escalates the problem, causing you to spiral into a full blown attack.
Again, what makes it worse is when you are having panic attacks when driving or even on an airplane, is because you are somewhere from which you feel that you cannot escape. After all, a panic attack is essentially your ‘fight or flight’ mechanism coming into effect, helping you win a fight or to flee from danger. When all exits are closed, it makes the situation worse.
